Seafoam Beach Backpack Crochet Pattern

I’m so thrilled to be able to say that my pattern won this week’s Design Wars Challenge! Thank you all so much for your votes! Now I’d like to tell ya all about it! With this pattern, you can create a tri-colored, lacy backpack that is perfect for carrying your towel and other essentials to the beach this summer!

When I got this yarn, I knew I wanted to make a bag. I love cotton yarns for bags because they’re sturdy and hold up well over time (unlike other fibers that get all fuzzy and worn out looking). Originally it was going to be a purse, then a market bag, but it evolved into a backpack and I’m so happy it did because I know it’s going to be so useful!

You could line it if you wanted to, if you plan on carrying anything small in it (I’m eventually going to make a lining tutorial to share). But as a beach bag, it’s nice to have no liner so that any sand that gets inside will just fall out through the holes. The open, lacy design also gives it a lot of stretch which is great when you want to stuff your towel and a change of clothes in there.

This design uses a simple repeating stitch pattern that’s easy to memorize. It’s perfect for road trips, days at the beach, Netflix nights and other times when you can’t give crocheting 100% of your attention!

It’s intended for worsted weight yarn and like I said, cottons work great! I designed it with Red Heart Creme de la Creme and also made another one using Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Cotton! If you wanted to make a smaller backpack (a purse maybe?), you could try it with DK or Sport weight yarn.

You can read more about the stitches and techniques used on Ravelry.
