Waffle Cone Slouchy Hat Free Crochet Pattern

This is a very basic, mesh hat pattern! It’s a bit different than my other slouchy hats. This one is actually a skully hat that gets it’s slouchiness from being extra long. I think you’ll love making it! It’s super quick and I designed it to take only one skein of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick!

Edit (3/9/2017): This pattern has been completely rewritten and there is now a video available to show you how to make this hat! Check it out on YouTube!

  1. You are SO SWEET!!! Thank you so much !! I have loved this pattern since I first saw it in your store and have been waiting to purchase it. Thank you so much for giving this to us! What a nice surprise!

    Best wishes to you!!

  2. I like this pattern but I am a little confused about what (1 dc, ch 1 twice in next dc… I get that you do 1 double crochet but then I don’t understand what chain 1 twice in the next double crochet means…. Sorry if this is a dumb question, I am a beginner so any help would be greatly appreciated.

  3. Hello, I just found your blog and I like what I see. Your patterns are very beautiful :) um what other yarns would you recommend for this hat? Lion Brand is a luxury yarn at my local craft store…I have Red Heart, but I know that’s not considered a bulky yarn. Any suggestions of yarn that isn’t over $4.00? Thank you I really can’t wait to make these hats…also do I have permission to sell my finished item?
    Thank you for you time.

    1. Hi! Thanks so much! :) I don’t really have any other yarn suggestions. I know you can get Hometown USA on sale for less than $4, so maybe just look out for a sale? Or you could compare it to other yarns at the store and see if you can find something that matches it’s size. Good luck!

And no, I don’t allow anything made from my patterns to be sold. You can read my copyright info at the bottom of the post. Thanks for asking! :)

  4. This turned out so cute. I am a beginner and I actually understood this pattern. Thank you for helping build my confidence!

  5. Love it!I do the waffle differently and I can’t figure out how to make a hat with the stitch I do. Now I don’t have to!I will learn YOUR stitch because it makes such a beautiful hat. My granddaughters will love it. Michele

  6. Love this easy pattern but I am stuck on–3rd row ends with 16 dc. If I dc (3rd row) in each of the 16 dc from the 2nd row, how do I end up with 24 dc? I get 32 dc
    Thanks
    Laurie

  7. I just finished making this – wonderful pattern, extremely clear and I am LOVING my new hat. I’ll be back for more of your patterns for sure. Thank you SO much!

  8. Please help. Started your hat and having a problem with row 2 and 3. Row 2 ends with 16 dc. If I dc in each of them for row 3 I end up with 32 dc not 24. How can I get the 24. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks
    Laurie

    1. Laurie,

I think you are getting stuck on round 3 bc you are doubling the stitch in every stitch. You should be doing 1dc, ch1 in a dc then doing 1dc ch1 twice in a dc, then back to doing just 1dc, ch1 in the next stitch. Does that make more sense? You are currently doubling in every dc and you should only be doubling in every other, thats why you should get 24 rather then 36. I hope that helps you!

      1. Thanks Monica! I was having the same problem as Laurie. I’ve been crocheting for well over 10 years and discovered, early on, that patterns vary greatly. Sometimes what seems simple to another boggles me. Anyway, thanks again.

  9. Love this hat! It’s gorgeous! I was just a little confused by the first step. Do you start with a magic circle? The pic looks like you do… Thanks!

  10. Thanks so much for sharing this darling hat pattern.
I’m out of town and couldn’t wait to make it so ran to
the local Walmart and got some yarn and a hook..
It went so fast. And easy .. I do a have a question about
Making the band on round 12. I’m confused about 1 sc in
ch sp then 1 sc in dext dc it adds up to more than 48 stitches.
Any suggestions what I’m doing wrong?? Thanks.
And thanks for sharing the pattern.. Mel :)

  11. I love the Waffle Cone Slouchy Hat! It’s gonna be the first project I do in January, 2012. Thanks for the pattern! MERRY CHRISTMAS and have a HAPPY NEW YEAR! Happy crocheting!

  12. I would love to print the pattern for Waffle Cone Slouchy Hat , sooo cute . But I would have to print 14 pages.
So other than hand printing I cannot get it . My printer prints the last page first which is a big problem .

  13. If you are sharinh this pattern, why can’t you, if you like it, make it for others to have. If I see a pattern that I like, and someone wants me to make it for them, I will do it, but you are stating that we cannot do this, but to actually come out and say to the public that we have to purchase it – why advertise on “all free crochet website” if you are selling this pattern. I just do not get what you are trying to do. I like the pattern, but will not stoop down low enough to buy it from you.

    1. D, I think you are misunderstanding. You may make this for yourself, or gift it to someone. What you cannot do is make 10 of them and sell them at a craft sale. She is giving the pattern free stating that if she is not going to make money off of it, then neither can you. She did however ask those who like it to consider looking at her other patterns for sale and consider purchasing one of those to help support her for sharing this free pattern. Hope that clarifies so you don’t see her as doing something wrong.

  14. Beautiful Hat…I dont understand “chain 1 twice in next double crochet”. does that mean make a double crochet then chain 2 then make another double crochet in the next double crochet?? Im a little stuck..please help..thank you

    1. 1 dc ch1 twice in nect dc – means you are going to dc ch1 2 times in the next dc- its in other words telling you to increase by doing that step twice in the same dc stitch. Hope this helps!

  15. Quick question – at the end of Round 1, which stitch do you slip stitch in to join? Answer would greatly be appreciated!! Thank you for the pattern!! :)

    1. I am a beginner and I’m wondering the same thing :( I keep messing up somehow and in rnd 2 I keep finishing the 16 dc before I get to the other end of the circle.

    2. M&M, generally, unless stated otherwise in the pattern, to join a double crochet round, one joins in the third chain of what’s considered the first double crochet. In this instants, the chain four (which counts as one double crochet plus one chain). Hope this makes sense.

  16. I think this hat is very cute and fashionable…Im going to try and make one for my daughter’s Grandmother.

  17. man i love this pattern. im new to crocheting so as soon as i figure out how to read this pattern without messing up im oh so surely going to make it no joke! you have talent

  18. I love this hat, but don’t know if I can do it; it looks so simple but I am not very experienced with my crocheting. I have a hard time reading instructions because when I am unsure of something, then I can’t make it work at all for myself. Keep sharing your beautiful work for us to enjoy. I have several women in my family who would love to have a slouch hat, in fact, one wants s longer one than even these are. If you have a solution, I’d love to try one.
Thanks again for sharing and your work is so perfect and so well done.

  19. Beautiful pattern. Thank you for sharing and best wishes for a wonderful holiday season…and a great 2012.

  20. Thank you so much!!
I used a size P hook for the majority of the piece and then a N hook for the last few rounds. I just couldn’t get the gauge right with the smaller hook. But once I was done and put it on, my hair tucks in perfectly, its loose enough around my head and it’s just beautiful. (I did a little happy dance fyi-lol)

  21. The Waffle Cone Slouchy Hat is simply adorable, and will make wonderful Christmas Gifts or anytime winter gifts. Thank you so much for doing this for us….
