How to: From Skully Hat to Slouchy Hat!

Lately, I’ve preferred the look and slouchiness of a too long skully hat over an actual slouchy hat. Think of the Waffle Cone slouchy hat. It’s a skully (fitted hat) that has some slouch in the back due to being too long.

I made this hat using my Pineapple Coconut skully hat pattern. The only modification I made is where the pattern says, “rnds 10-15 (6 rnds): rep rnds 7-9 two times“, I repeated those round four times rather than two. Super easy! You could probably modify just about any skully hat pattern this way! :)

Here’s a couple pics for comparison. Modified skully slouchy above and the regular slouchy below (bad color/background choice there, sorry!)

Which style of slouchy do you prefer?

Fun fact: I wear sunglasses in indoor pics when I’m too lazy to do my makeup. hehe!

  1. I think I’d definitely prefer the first style because I’ve actually made one of your slouchy hats before, the gumdrop one, and while I love it, sometimes I have a hard time getting it to sit right on my head. I think the overlong version would be comfy because it’d be snug.

  2. I actually bought the pattern to make the modified skully, but I was just wondering – is it supposed to look like a giant ruffled doily 7 rows in? Haha

      1. One more question… how many inches across is the circle supposed to measure when you’re checking gauge? The pattern doesn’t actually say. I think the hook I used was too big, but I’d like to make sure before I start over. :)

  3. Hello. Lovely site! I love the look of these slouchy hats and you have done a fine job of making your own, however, I cannot knit or crochet or do any yarn crafts; I can only sew. Do you know of any way I can sew one these? I do not know of anyone who does yarn crafts nor do I wish to purchase one and I really would like to make one. Thank you! Keep up the fine work, dear!
