Free Pattern: Sugar Cone Skully Hat

Ever since I wrote the Waffle Cone Slouchy hat pattern, I’ve wanted to make a worsted weight version. So here it is! It’s just as easy (and quick!) to make but lighter weight. Scroll down for the free pattern! :)

Finished Size: Around edge = 19 inches. From edge to center of top = 10 inches. Measurements were taken while laying flat, unstretched. It’s super stretchy!

Difficulty level: Advanced beginner/Intermediate

● Size H (5mm) crochet hook (or size needed to obtain gauge)
● Yarn Needle for finishing
● Worsted weight yarn

Yarn used in examples: Caron Simply Soft in Passion and Ocean

sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
rep – repeat
rnd – round
ea – each
sp – space
st/sts – stitch/stitches
FO – finish off

This pattern is worked in joined rounds. Join at the end of each round, where the pattern says to. Ch 4′s at the beginning of rounds will always count as 1 dc + 1 ch. Ch 1′s at the beginning of rounds 20-22 will count as 1 sc. Be sure to check your gauge after rnd 4.

Gauge: To check gauge, work rnds 1-4. Resulting circle should measure 5 inches across. Refer to the picture below for another way to check gauge.  1 dc + 1 ch x2 should = just under an inch.

rnd 1: ch 4 (counts as 1 dc + 1 ch now and throughout). 1 dc in 4th ch from hook. ch 1. In same ch sp as before:  [1 dc, ch 1] 8 times. sl st to join. (10 dc)

rnd 2: ch 4. 1 dc in same sp. ch 1. [1 dc, ch 1 twice in next dc] rep around.  sl st to join. (20 dc)

rnd 3: ch 4. 1 dc, ch 1 twice in next dc. [1 dc, ch 1 in next dc. 1 dc, ch 1 twice in next dc.] rep around. sl st to join. (30 dc)

rnd 4: ch 4. 1 dc, ch 1 in ea of the next 2 dc. [1 dc, ch 1 in ea of the next 2 dc.1 dc, ch 1 twice in next dc.] rep around. sl st to join. (40 dc)

rnds 5-19 (15 rnds): ch 4. [1 dc, ch 1 in next dc] rep around. sl st to join. (40 dc)

rnd 20: ch 1 (counts as 1 sc). 1 sc in next ch sp. [1 sc in next dc. 1 sc in next ch sp.] rep around. sl st to join. (80 sc)

rnds 21-22 (2 rnds): ch 1 (counts as 1 sc). Work in back loops only: 1 sc in ea sc. (80 sc)

Free Pattern: Goddess Barefoot Sandals

As promised, here is the freebie barefoot sandal pattern! These sandals are made with embroidery floss or crochet thread, which I know can be intimidating, but I use a size C hook which is larger than what you would normally use for such small thread, and makes it much easier to work with! This pattern is the easiest of the sandals I’ve designed but is definitely not a beginner pattern. I hope you enjoy! :)

Finished Size: (unstretched) Approx. 3 1/2 inches across/tall. Straps can be made any length.

Difficulty Level: Advanced Intermediate.

• Size C (2.5mm) crochet hook (or size needed to obtain gauge).
• Needle for finishing.
• Beads (optional).
• 5 skeins of embroidery floss.

Colors used in examples: DMC Embroidery Floss in 3808 and 817

sc ‐ single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
ch ‐ chain
sl st ‐ slip stitch
p – picot
rep ‐ repeat
rnd ‐ round
ea ‐ each
sk- skip
sp ‐ space
st/sts ‐ stitch/stitches
FO ‐ finish off

Video tutorials for these three special stitches/techniques are available on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/GleefulThings

picot (p) - The picots I’m using in this pattern are a bit different than what you’ll find in other patterns, but really easy. All you have to do is ch 2 and then sl st in the same sc you started the ch in.

Invisible Join - Photo tutorial here.

Adding beads - If you want to add beads to this pattern, I recommend  adding them in the middle of the picot. What you would do is ch 1. add a bead. ch 1. sl st in the sc you started the ch in.

This pattern is worked in rounds. Join rounds where the pattern says to. Gauge isn’t super important for this project, but  keep in mind that if your gauge is significantly different from mine, your sandals will end up smaller or larger than mine.  It may also require extra embroidery floss if your gauge is larger/more loose than mine.

Gauge: After rnd 1, the circle should measure approximately 1 inch across. Double crochets should be approximately 1/2″ tall.

rnd 1: ch 6. sl st to join.

rnd 2: sl st into ring and ch 3 (counts as 1 dc). 18 dc in ring. sl st to join. (18 dc)

rnd 3: [ch 4, sk 2 sts, 1 sc.] 5 times. ch 4. sl st to join. (6 ch 4 sps)

rnd 4: ch 1, sc in next ch sp. [ch 6, 1 sc in next ch sp.] 5 times. ch 6. sl st to join. (6 ch 6 sps)

rnd 5: sl st in ch. ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc). 1 hdc & 3 dc in same ch sp. ch 4. 3 dc & 2 hdc in same ch sp. 9 sc in next ch sp. [2 hdc & 3 dc in next ch sp. ch 4. 3 dc & 2 hdc in same ch sp. 9 sc in next ch sp.] rep around. sl st to join.

rnd 6: 1 sc. 1 sc & p. 1 sc.  1 sc & p. 1 sc. 4 hdc in ch sp. ch to desired length for the toe loop (I used 20 ch). 4 hdc in same ch sp. 1 sc. 1 sc & p. 1 sc.  1 sc & p. 1 sc. [ch 5. sk 4 sts. 1 sc.] twice.

* 1 sc & p. 1 sc.  1 sc & p. 1 sc. 4 hdc in ch sp. ch to desired length for the strap (I made mine 26 inches). Tie a knot at the end and FO. Draw up a loop in the last hdc where you started the chain. 4 hdc in same ch sp. 1 sc. 1 sc & p. 1 sc.  1 sc & p. 1 sc. [ch 5. sk 4 sts. 1 sc.] twice.

Repeat from * once. Invisible join to FO.

Starting the 1st & 2nd rounds:

It starts with a chain of 6. Slip stitch into the very first ch you made (the one furthest from the hook) to join and make a ring.

Slip stitch around the ring and ch 3. This counts as your first dc of round 2. Continue making dc’s in the ring.

Where to start after the strap:

The arrow in the first picture points to the last hdc you made before you started chaining to make the strap. After you’re done making the strap, to start crocheting again, you’ll draw up a loop in the hdc that the arrow is pointing to. The arrow in the second picture points to the loop, which became part of the first hdc when you started crocheting again.

DIY: Crochet Project Bag Sewing Tutorial

I feel like I’m always toting around a plastic shopping bag full of yarn whenever I want to take my crochet project somewhere with me. So I thought it would be nice to make something a little less ghetto to carry my projects around in! :P

This is a really quick and easy bag to sew! It can hold 2-3 balls of yarn + hooks, scissors, pattern, etc. It has a square bottom so it can sit flat and has a simple drawstring closure. Nothing fancy or difficult! Just a nifty little bag that you can make in less than an hour!

SUPPLIES

- 2 Cotton fabrics, an outer & lining (about a 1/2 yard of each will do)
- Cord, ribbon, or yarn for the ties
- Sewing machine & basic sewing supplies

PATTERN

This pattern is a really simple shape so it would be much easier for you to draw it out with a ruler than to cut out and tape together a bunch of pieces like I normally give my patterns. Refer to the picture below for the measurements to make your pattern.

1/2″ seam allowances are included

Step 1: Cut 2 pieces from each of your fabrics.

Step 2: With right sides together, sew along the sides and bottom (pink lines). Repeat this step on your lining fabric also.

Step 3: Flatten the bottom of the bag so that the side and bottom seams that you just sewed are lined up. Sew across on both sides. Repeat this step on your lining fabric also.

Step 4: At the top of both side seams, measure down 1 1/2 inches and undo the stitching up to that point. Next, sew closely around the edge, as shown in the picture on the right, to hold the seam down. (Do this step on outer fabric only, not the lining fabric).

Step 5: With right sides together, sew your outer fabric and lining together around the top. Make sure to leave a little space where you can turn it right side out.

Step 6: Turn right side out and use your iron to press the top flat. Next, top stitch around about a 1/8″ from the top (this will sew the hole you left for turning shut). Then top stitch around again, right below the hole you left for the drawstrings (should be about 1 inch from the top).

Step 7: Cut 2 drawstrings from cord or ribbon or make a crochet chain like I did. Each should be about 32 inches long.

Step 8: Put 1 drawstring into one of the holes on the side and weave it all the way through, bring it out the same side you started on and knot the ends together. Repeat the same with the other drawstring except start and finish in the hole on the opposite side of the bag.

Happy Crocheting!
