DIY Photo Booth Tips

I made my first attempt at setting up a DIY photo booth at my Grandma’s 90th birthday party and I wanted to share some things I learned (the hard way). Just some do’s and don’ts that might help anyone wanting to try making their own photo booth. I used a table cloth as the background and stapled some garland to it. All you really need is a tripod and a camera with a timer. I set the camera to take 4 consecutive shots, 3 seconds apart. I don’t have a remote for my camera so I just stood there and pressed the button. I didn’t have a tutorial to follow but here are a few that might inspire you: 1, 2, 3, 4.

♥ If you’re making your photo booth outdoors, it would be a good idea to get an ez up type canopy to block the sun. If you don’t want to buy one, most party rental places have them for rent. Just make sure you get a white one (a colored one would give your photos a tint of that color) and make sure that it’s tall enough to not be in the photo. I discovered that ours was too low so we had to bring in a bench for people to sit on rather than stand.

♥ Set up your camera on the tripod first and then set up your background so you’ll be able to see how it looks through the camera. I made the mistake of stapling my whole background in place, didn’t set up the camera until we were ready to use it, and then discovered that the background didn’t fit the frame properly. At that point, it was too late to fix it. Argh!

♥ Don’t use a word banner like our Happy Birthday one. It was too long to fit the frame so I find myself either chopping the ends off when cropping the photos (so you only see “ppy Birth”) or having to crop too loosely (with the floor and roof showing) in order to fit the whole thing.

♥ Shopping for props was my absolute favorite part of this whole thing but don’t feel like you have to spend a lot of money. Everyone probably has at least one old Halloween costume laying around, right?! Asking friends and family if they have any old costume items you can borrow is a good way to build your prop collection for free! There were some things that I really found necessary to buy (giant glasses, blow up guitar, sombrero!) but I was also able to find a couple wigs and bunny ears in my old costume box.

♥ There are plenty of props you can make for really cheap. Mustaches were a favorite for us and were probably the cheapest prop we had. I made them from a sheet of craft foam, hot glue, and some wood dowels. You could make a dozen for about $3! You can find lots of free templates for them on the internet, here are the mustaches and lips I used.

♥ You know how cute chalk boards look in photos? I really wanted some but couldn’t find any little ones. My mom ended up buying small dry erase boards instead and they totally did not show up well in the photos, nor did they look as cute as chalk boards. Here’s a fun tutorial on how to make chalkboard speech bubbles. I wish I would have done that instead!

♥ If you want to do the typical photo booth thing (you know, four consecutive shots where you’re supposed to pose differently in each?), make sure to explain the concept to people. I found that some of my family totally got the photo booth concept but others just thought I had set up a nice background and wanted them to wear silly costumes. Of course if that’s what you want, there’s nothing wrong with that! :)

Have you ever set up your own photo booth? What worked & didn’t for you?

Happy Birthday Grandma!

My Grandma turned 90 this past weekend and we had a big party for her (90 is a big deal!). She wanted photos of everyone so I surprised her by setting up a photo booth, complete with lots of crazy props!

My mom, Grandma, and I rocking mustaches! :P

This is me trying to be my character from Little Big Planet. If only I had a cape, inner tube, and dragon sock puppet. I built the most random character ever! :P

I made her an amigurumi cupcake with 90 written on it. It even has beads for sprinkles and a cherry on top!

It was a really fun time! And even though the photo booth didn’t work out quite as I planned, I think everyone had fun with it! I’m going to have to make a post with DIY photo booth tips to share what I learned!

Birthday Hoop Day!

So, I turned 29 this past week (yuck!)! I kinda hate admitting my age now (not that I didn’t already) but I guess I should celebrate my last year of being in my 20′s, right?! And celebrate, I did! I had three days of birthday celebrations! My friends made sure I had an amazing time and I heart them for it!

Celebration #1? A hoopy birthday party, of course! I didn’t really plan much since it was a Wednesday. I didn’t think anyone would wanna go out aside from our usual Wednesday night hoop practice. But I was surprised with cupcakes, champagne, and something from my wishlist that I totally didn’t think I’d actually get!!

I’m really curious why my teeth seem to be glowing in this pic!

After nomming some cute cupcakes, we had our little LED hoop jam!

And then we had to pose for more photos because that’s what we do! :P

And then they gave me my surprise! (which I had to read by hoop light). They pooled their money and gave me a gift card to buy a fire hoop!!! My friends are sooo awesome! I totally wasn’t expecting this! I feel so lucky!

I haven’t gotten mine yet but my friend brought her fire hoop for us to play with! I promise you’ll be seeing mine very soon though! I’m so excited to get it!!

Unfortunately, I didn’t get any good pictures of my other two birthday celebrations. For my second celebration, my friend surprised me with tickets to see New Found Glory. I ended up realizing that it was sort of a 10 year anniversary thing because we also saw them for my 19th birthday. It was a total coincidence! Weird, huh?! It was way more fun than I was expecting! For my third celebration, we went out to a gastropub that I totally love! We had yummy beers, fancy food, and even fancier cocktails! Strawberry tequila shots and a drink that I’m calling liquid apple pie. It tasted just like apple pie!

My Birthday Wishlist!

My birthday is Wednesday and I’ve been meaning to put together a wishlist forever now. My family still demands one from me every year, but it’s something I usually love doing anyway, even without an occasion. But this one was really hard for me, which I guess, is why I kept putting it off. I’ve been unemployed for so long that I guess I’ve just gotten used to not being able to have things. Sad, right? I know my blog is called Gleeful Things, but I’m allowed to have my moments. Being happy 100% of the time isn’t normal. So, I guess what I’m really wishing for is a job. But other than that, here are some things I’d like! :)

1. This pretty fringy dress from Swell!
2. This bunny ears ring from Etsy! I could actually make an entire wishlist of just big, funky rings that I want!
3. A new LED hoop (mine died about a year ago)! I’m loving this one from Mood Hoops! Pink and orange is kinda my thing!
4. A big furry hat! I’d be happy with just a piece of fabric to make my own though. :)
5. Minnetonka fringe boots! I’ve been wanting these for SO long! Pic is from here.
6. A cute little leather bag, like this one. Because I need to stop carrying such a huge purse all the time!
7. Dew Drops yarn from Michael’s. This is so pretty, it has sequins in it!
8. A fire hoop!! I would be so excited to celebrate my birthday with fire!
9. Tinsel hair extensions! I just recently saw these for the first time and I thought they were so pretty! I love sparkle!
10. Lustrous Lamb yarn from Joann’s. Ok, so I may already have some! But I’d love more! This is a new favorite of mine! I’ll have to post a review soon.

Happy Birthday to me!

I’m officially in denial about my age. I don’t feel 28! How did this happen? :O hehe! Regardless, it was still fun to celebrate! I planned a bike ride / bar crawl / Taco Tuesday celebration because that’s something that I love to do and I didn’t want to miss a Taco Tuesday! Is Taco Tuesday a Californian thing, or do they do that everywhere? I’m not sure. In case you’ve never heard of it, lots of places will offer really good deals on tacos on Tuesdays. We like to go during happy hour to get deals on yummy drinks along with our tacos!

We started out in Redondo Beach. First stop was a beer bar called Naja’s that has like 80 beers on tap. I had a few different beers. Whatever friends put in front of me! heh! I’m not really much of a beer person but I do enjoy trying all of them at least once.

This is my excited face!! When I type this :D, you should picture me making the face above! :D

Jill felt up Kristi while Glenn tried to retrieve one of my balloons that came loose and floated away.

This is my beeeeeautiful bike! After leaving Naja’s, they tied my balloons to it. I loved it but only rode it a little way to the parking structure because we opted to drive to the next bar instead of ride.

We ended up at Sharkeez in Hermosa Beach, which is one of my favorite places to get Tacos. Their shrimp tacos are soooo good!

And this is what happens when I drunkenly try to take pictures! That’s my margarita. Oh hey! And Lisa in the background! :D
