Why You’ll Love This Beanie

  • Use your favorite yarn – It’s very easy to substitute just about any #4 yarn worsted weight yarn for this hat so try your fave!
  • One hat, two looks – Fold the edge over to wear it as a beanie, or leave it long and wear it as a slouchy. You get two styles out of the same hat!

  • Great practice – This beginner friendly hat is perfect for someone who is learning to crochet and wants to practice their double crochet & front post double crochets!

Yarn

#4 worsted weight yarn: Approximately 215 (240) yards of Malabrigo Worsted in #050 Roanoke

Yarn Substitute Ideas

  • Malabrigo Rios – Very similar to Malabrigo Worsted but a great option if you prefer superwash wool, and there are also different colors available.
  • Cascade 220 – Prefer a solid colored wool? Cascade 220 offers so many to choose from!
  • Lion Brand Basic Stitch & Red Heart Soft – If you’d like to keep it budget friendly, these acrylic yarns are easy to find at your local craft store and affordable.
  • Lion Brand Feels Like Butta – A personal favorite of mine! I think you’ll love how soft this fuzzy yarn is! Plus it’s polyester, a very warm choice for a hat.

Notes

  1. Hat is worked flat in rows and then stitched together to form a tube. Top will be cinched shut at the end.
  2. Pattern is written for women’s size with adjustments for men’s size in parentheses.

Instructions

Leave a long tail in the beginning to cinch the top shut at the end.

Row 1: Ch 38 (41), (1st 3 ch count as 1 dc) 1 dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across – 36 (39) dc.

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as 1 FPdc) & turn, 1 FPdc in each st across – 36 (39) FPdc.

Row 3: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc) & turn, 1 dc in each st across – 36 (39) dc.

Row 4-39 (4-41): Repeat rows 2-3.

Row 40 (42): Repeat row 2.

Finishing

Cut yarn leaving a long tail and pull it up through the stitch. Using yarn needle and the tail, stitch final row to beginning chain to form a tube and fasten off.

Using the yarn needle and the tail left in the beginning, stitch around the end of the tube.

Pull tight to cinch the end shut. If this leaves a hole and is not completely shut, continue weaving the yarn around under the stitches and pull until the hole is closed. Fasten off.

This hat can be worn long as a slouchy hat or fold up the edge and wear it as a beanie.
