Birthday Mandala Free Crochet Pattern

What exactly is a birthday mandala? It’s a mandala that I release on my birthday! :D

I designed this pattern a while ago and have been hanging onto it, trying to decide whether or not I wanted to create something larger with it. At some point, I might do that, but I also love it just as it is live casino go. This is such a good use for scrap yarn and they’re also easy and relaxing to make, which I love! So I’m happy that today I get to share this pattern with you and I hope you enjoy making them as much as I have! :)

Yarn

Knit Picks Dishie, worsted weight yarn: Small amounts of #25411 Conch (A), #25400 Linen (B)

Materials

US Size G/6 (4mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge, yarn needle, scissors

Difficulty

Beginner

Size

7 ½” across from point to point

Gauge

Work rounds 1-2, resulting circle should measure 2 ½” across.

Stitch Guide

ch(s) – chain(s), sc – single crochet, dc – double crochet, st(s) – stitch(es), sl st – slip stitch, yo – yarn over

Special Stitches

  • Standing sc – Start with a slip knot, insert hook into specified st/ch space, yo & draw up a loop, yo & draw through both loops.
  • Standing dc – Start with a slip knot, yo & insert hook into specified st/ch space, yo & draw up a loop, [yo & draw through two loops] twice.

Instructions:

Round 1: With A, ch 4 (counts as 1 dc & 1 ch), [1 dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 1] 9 times, invisible join to 3rd ch and fasten off A – 10 dc + 10 ch 1 spaces.

Round 2: With B, 1 standing dc in any ch space, 1 dc in same ch space, ch 1, *2 dc in next ch space, ch 1; repeat from * around, invisible join to standing dc and fasten off B – 20 dc + 10 ch 1 spaces.

Round 3: With A, 1 standing dc in any ch space, ch 1, 1 dc in same ch space, ch 1, *1 dc in next ch space, ch 1, 1 dc in same ch space, ch 1; repeat from * around, sl st to standing dc to join– 20 dc + 20 ch 1 spaces.

Round 4: Sl st into next ch space, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in same ch space, ch 1, 1 sc in next ch space, ch 1, *3 dc in next ch space, ch 1, 1 sc in next ch space, ch 1; repeat from * around, invisible join to top of ch 3 and fasten off A – 30 dc + 10 sc + 20 ch 1 spaces.

Round 5: With B, 1 standing sc in any sc, ch 3, skip 1 dc, 1 sc in next dc, ch 3, *1 sc in next sc, ch 3, skip 1 dc, 1 sc in next dc, ch 3; repeat from * around, sl st to join to standing sc – 20 sc + 20 ch 3 spaces.

Round 6: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st), *sc in next ch space, ch 4; repeat from * around, sl st to join to 1st sc – 20 sc + 20 ch 4 spaces.

Round 7: Sl st into next ch space, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in same ch space, ch 3, 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook, 3 dc in same ch space as previous 3 dc, ch 1, 1 sc in next ch space, ch 1, *3 dc in next ch space, ch 3, 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook, 3 dc in same ch space as previous 3 dc, ch 1, 1 sc in next ch space, ch 1; repeat from * around, invisible join to top of ch 3 and fasten off B – 60 dc + 20 sc + 20 ch 1 spaces.
