Spikes Yarn Basket Free Crochet Pattern

A while back I posted a basket that I designed as a way to use up some of the worsted weight yarn in my stash and today I’m sharing a similar pattern!  This is actually a little fancier than the original basket but if you prefer the look of the original basket, the pattern is exactly the same as this except you will eliminate rnds 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, & 18. Super easy modification! ;)

Difficulty Level: Intermediate

Finished Size:  Approximately 12 inches in diameter & 8 inches tall

This basket is made using two strands of worsted weight yarn held together.

● Worsted weight yarn in 4 colors. Approximately 390 yards of the main color (CA) and small amounts of the rest.
● Size N (9mm) crochet hook
● Yarn needle for finishing

Yarns used in examples:
Green Basket: Loops & Threads Impeccable in Kelly Green(CA), Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Dusty Rose (CB), Pink Poodle (CC), Pea Green (CD)
Gray Basket: Loops & Threads Impeccable in True Grey(CA), Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Magenta (CB), Burgundy (CC), Honey (CD)

Invisible Join -An invisible join will be used at the end of a color, when you’re about to start a new one. Here is a video tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsHggQGFq3A

Spike Stitch -On rnds 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 spike stitches are used.  In those rnds you will be instructed to “1 sc in st below next st.” – this is the spike stitch. A spike stitch is simply a single crochet that is made in the previous rnd rather than the current one. If you were making a normal single crochet, you would put it where the X is in the photo below. Instead you will make it in the same stitch that that stitch is in, in the previous rnd, where the arrow is pointing in the photo below.

What you will do is insert your hook into that stitch (where the arrow is pointing, in the previous rnd), draw up a loop to the height of the current rnd and finish your single crochet as normal.

sc- single crochet
dc – double crochet
hdc – half double crochet
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
rep – repeat
rnd – round
ea – each
sp – space
st/sts – stitch/stitches
FO – finish off
CA- Color A (main color)
CB, CC, CD- Color B,C,D

This pattern is worked in joined rounds. Join at the end of each round, when the pattern says to, using the type of join that round calls for.

Gauge is not critical, however if your gauge is different than mine, your basket will be larger or smaller than mine.

Gauge : 5 dc = 2 inches

You will be holding two strands of yarn together throughout the entire pattern.

  1. I love this basket! Thank you so much for the pattern! I guess using the yarn double makes the basket nice and stiff rather than floppy – perfect for yarn, WsIP, bread, fruit, pretty well anything! Elizabeth x

  2. I love the green basket at the top and I am certainly going to have to find time to make one of these! Thanks so much for inspiring me!

  3. Not sure if I’ve done something wrong. I’m up to row 12 and it still looks like a big doily. Pretty, but flat. Not looking like a basket. Love the look of the pattern. Any suggestions? Thanks so much.

  4. I am not very good with picking colours but I do love your grey basket colours. Just love it. Thank you for sharing

  5. I can not tell you how long I have been looking for a basket to make. Oh I have seen others, but this is EXACTLY what I have been looking for. Thank you so much for sharing. I am fairly new to crocheting, I have been knitting for 50+ years, always resisted crocheting. It wasn’t until we were having an 1890’s party that I was forced to teach myself to crochet, to make a ladies cape. That was 15 or 20 years ago, and I am crocheting more than I knit now. I just love it, and seems to always have multiple projects going at once, so I will be forced to make several of these baskets. I just happened upon this website and now have it bookmarked. I will be visiting your store just as soon as I hit “send” on this note. Thank you again, for your generosity!

  6. I love this pattern! Thank you so much for being generous enough to share it. You are an excellent pattern writer! It’s so clearly written…if only all crochet patterns were so easy to follow! I’m now following your YouTube channel as well and I’m excited to explore what other projects you’ve shared. Thanks again!

  7. OMG! This is the first time I’ve seen this basket! I guess I missed because I LOVE your hat patterns and usually looking for a new one from you! I have no ink right now to print but will write it down and start on it soon! A few of my friends on facebook have been looking for this type of basket definately will be sharing it! Thanks again for your AMAZING PATTERNS! Manda!
