Gumdrop Slouchy Hat Free Crochet Pattern

Merry Christmas everyone! My gift to you is a free slouchy hat crochet pattern! :D

This is a really simple hat that even a beginner crocheter could handle! You can make it a solid color or change colors after every round to make stripes! I made a couple that are half and half. I’ve noted the color change in the pattern if you like that look and want to do it that way. :)

● Size J crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
● Yarn needle
● “Chunky Yarn” in 1 or 2 colors
I recommend Paton’s Shetland Chunky. Any yarn that is just a bit thicker than worsted weight will work. You’ll need approximately 220 yards. I used a ball and a half of Shetland Chunky for each of these hats.

ch – chain
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
ea – each
st – stitch
rep – repeat
rnd – round
sc2tog – 2 single crochets together (decrease)
dc2tog – 2 double crochets together (decrease)
sl st – slip stitch
FO – finish/fasten off
CA – Color A
CB – Color B

This hat is crocheted in rounds. Join where the pattern says to at the end of each round. Ignore color changes if you’re making a solid colored hat. Don’t forget to check your gauge. :)

Gauge:
At the end of rnd 3, laying flat = 4 1/2 inches in diameter.

If you have any questions about this pattern, specifically rounds 3-5, please check out this post on how to read crochet patterns, where I explain those rounds.

  3. I was making this hat for myself and I’m having trouble on rnd 14…I always get more than 64 st. and my 6-13 rnds have 80 st in them. So I’m a little confused.

    1. I had the same issue, but I realized what it means is that you do a sc in 2 separate stitches then in the third on one you do 2 sc.
      Visual: I=sc ,= stitch

      Right: I,I,II,I,I,II,I,I,II
      Wrong: II,II,II,II,II,II
and for 5th round it would be:
      I,I,I,II,I,I,I,II,I,I,I,II
      Hope that helps! :)

    2. Had the same problem and ripped out several times thinking I goofed. Then i thought there might be a mistake in directions. Began rnd 14 with 2dc dc2tog then followed repeat to the end and it worked.

    1. hello lindsey

i was just reading some of the comments, and I came across yours – did you get the answer about rnd 14?

      1. I have figured why a lot of people are stuck on rnd 14. Here is the answer:
Chain 3. Make 3 double crochets. With your next double crochet, start as normal but stop after you pull through the first two loops. You should still have two loops on your hook. Yarn over and insert your hook through the next space. Yarn over your hook and pull through two loops. You should now have three loops on your hook. Yarn over again and pull through all three loops. this is a decrease and is considered on stitch not 2. I hope this helps

  7. I just came up with this great pattern, thank you I will try next week and keep you posted with the results. It looks gorgeous, thank you for sharing.

  8. Hi, Julie,
Last year, I saw this slouchy hat pattern, and made it as a gift for my daughter’s friend. Lisa wanted me to make a hat that would cover the hair entirely, and this one looked good, so I made it. It worked perfectly, so Thank You for this. The lady I made this for sent me a photo of her wearing it, which made me so happy that I may make her another one this year.
I may even make one for myself, for if I have to go out and my hair does not cooperate—-

    1. Elaine; I’m making the gumdrop slouchy hat and I’m stuck on rnd 14. It says to
Ch3. [3dc. dc2tog], could you help me in my e-mail as to how you did this round.

      Thank You,
      Linda Eshom

  9. Worked up nice, however I think it would look better if worked in the continual round, not joining each round with a sl st. Thank you for sharing ur pattern!!!

  10. This was my first slouchy hat I’ve mad and I love it…I had to make the edge a bit smaller to stay on my head but other than that, I LOVE IT! Thank you so much for sharing this pattern

  13. Great pattern … making it for a neighbour. End of round 14, so far so good.

For the sc2tog … do you suggest using the back loops (or inbetween the posts)? I can’t tell from the pictures and didn’t see it mentioned in posts below.

Thank-you for the help… I know I will be making a few of these for people, its a lovely, well proportioned slouchy.

    1. I’m having trouble with the Gumdrop slouchy Hat. On Rnd 14 it says ch 3.[3dc. dc2tog]I don’t know exactly how to do this?

      1. from what i can see – your making a cluster. ch the 3, make the dc, but draw thru 2 loops, then the second dc again draw thru two loops, and you shud now hv 3 loops on the hook, you draw thru all three – this makes the cluster. That the way I read
line 14 – hope it works. I’ll know when I get to it myself

      2. i sent you an e-mail earlier about rnd 14 – but i was wrong it is not a cluster its a decrease – your joining 2 dc together to decrease by one.

    1. Vicki, I have not made this exact pattern yet, but I’m going to try to help you.

rnd 14: ch 3. [3 dc. dc2tog] rep around. sl st to join. (64)

This is your decrease. Clear as mud? Watch this video on YouTube. (I’m a very visual person and his videos always seem to help me when I get stuck.)

      I hope this helps!

P.S. If you end up with 65 stitches, count the first chain 3 as one double crochet and do two more double crochets before you do the decrease and then repeat the three double crochets and decrease.

  14. I tried it, but mine came out really bulky. Is it because my stitches were too big? Any help or advice would be welcome. :)

  15. Hi, thank you for the pattern for the slouchy hat; however, I am stuck on rnd 14 I end up with more than 64. Can you help me get past this….I am new learner and was making this for my daughter.

    Thanks

  16. Hello, I’ve sent two comments for some help on the gumdrop slouchy hat fand still have not heard from anyone. I still need help on rnd 14.please please help!!!!

    1. Linda, I have not made this exact pattern yet, but I’m going to try to help you. I tried to post this same response to Vicki but it still says “Your comment is awaiting moderation.” Hopefully, this one will go through.

rnd 14: ch 3. [3 dc. dc2tog] rep around. sl st to join. (64)

  17. I love this hat and have tried 4 times to make. I have the right amount of stitches but for some reason the hat is coming out huge!! What am I doing wrong??

  18. I just made this hat and it is HUGE. Not sure if I did something wrong? Someone else had the same problem. What did I do wrong???
I used a J hook, chunky yarn (as stated in the pattern)… counted 17 rows… Help!

    1. I had to go down 3 hook sizes, use the guide after row 3. also, the chunky yarn I found was way chunkier than she used in the pattern, so you have to adjust.

  19. Hi! I am in desperate need of help with round 15. Do I just repeat the part that’s in parenthesis or the whole thing? And when it says 2sc, does that mean in separate stitches or the same stitch? Help!!!

  20. I love this hat. I just finished one for a friend of mine in two different color purples. She loves it!

  21. Hi, I’m working on this hat right now and I thought I ended with more than 64 on rnd 14 but I actually didn’t I was counting the decreasing stitches as two and they need to be counted as one. Hth!

  22. This hat is so cute! It’s the first actual crochet pattern I’m attempting. I do have one question, is there any way you could post progress pictures? I’m following the instructions but I’m just not sure my hat is the right size so far (I’m only on round 6).

    Thank you so much!

  23. I’m trying to make the gumdrop slouchy hat for my great niece, but I haven’t used patterns too much and I seem to be making some mistakes. The opening on the first hat was so small you couldn’t get it on your head and now I have made another one which turned out so big it falls clear down over your head. I have read and re-read but can’t figure out where I am making my mistakes. I have also watched videos online. Could you give me some suggestions or should I just sign up to take some classes?
    Thanks, Beverly

  24. Loved this pattern, whipped up a nice lavender hat in less than 2 hours. Perfect since it’s going to be cold tomorrow and I needed a hat to wear. Thanks!

  25. I wanted the ‘Gumdrop Slouchy Hat’ also (the green one at the top) but didn’t see where to download?

  26. How many chain stitches do you start with for the Gumdrop Slouchy Hat? I can not find this information on the website.

  27. I went down 2 hook sizes and added another decrease row. The yarn I used was really chunky, I don’t think there are levels of chunky. I think I will try the school colors for the neices in a smaller yarn.

  28. How can I make this for a preteen (11 yrs old)? Would I just eliminate round 5? Or just do less rows? Thanks!!!

  29. I was looking for a pattern that I could sell in my crochet shop. I guess a new pattern needs to be found :( I love the pattern!! Hope you have a great day!

  30. The no. of stitches that are in parentheses..do those include the chain 3 at the beginning and slip stitch at the end of the round or are those strictly the number of double crochets in the round?
