Waffle Cone Slouchy Hat Free Crochet Pattern
This is a very basic, mesh hat pattern! It’s a bit different than my other slouchy hats. This one is actually a skully hat that gets it’s slouchiness from being extra long. I think you’ll love making it! It’s super quick and I designed it to take only one skein of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick!

Yarn
Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick, #6 super bulky weight yarn: Approximately 80 yards of #146 Fig (purple) or #124 Barley (tan)
Materials
US Size N/13 (9mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge, yarn needle, scissors, tape measure

Size
22” around edge, 11” from top to edge.
Gauge
Work rounds 1-2, resulting circle should measure 5 inches across. 1 dc + 1 ch should = just under 1”.
Abbreviations
ch(s) – chain(s), sc – single crochet, dc – double crochet, st(s) – stitch(es), sl st – slip stitch, BLO – back loop only
Notes
1. Pattern is worked in joined rounds.
2. Ch 4 at beginning of rounds 1-11 will count as 1 dc + 1 ch.
3. Ch 1 at beginning of rounds 12 & 13 will count as 1 sc.

Instructions
Round 1: Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc + 1 ch now & throughout), [1 dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 1] 7 times, sl st to 3rd ch to join – 8 dc + 8 ch 1 spaces.
Round 2: Ch 4, 1 dc in same st, ch 1, *1 dc in next st, ch 1, 1 dc in same st, ch 1; repeat from * around, sl st to 3rd ch to join – 16 dc + 16 ch 1 spaces.
Round 3: Ch 4, 1 dc in next st, ch 1, 1 dc in same st, ch 1, *1 dc in next st, ch 1, 1 dc in next st, ch 1, 1 dc in same st, ch 1; repeat from * around, sl st to 3rd ch to join – 24 dc + 24 ch 1 spaces.
Rounds 4 -11: Ch 4, *1 dc in next st, ch 1; repeat from * around, sl st to 3rd ch to join – 24 dc + 24 ch 1 spaces.
Round 12: Ch 1 (counts as 1 sc now & throughout), 1 sc in next ch space, *1 sc in next st, 1 sc in next ch space; repeat from * around, sl st to ch 1 to join – 48 sc.
Round 13: Ch 1, 1 sc in BLO in each st around, invisible join to ch 1 and fasten off – 48 sc.

Hello, I love the hat patter but I have a question. I started ribbing and wanted the body of this hat. Would I start this and attach together or do you have a way to start this pattern working from ribbing and decrease to close the hat?
I love your ‘waffle cone slouchy hat. i have always crocheted and i also have MS and my right hand close up on m3 and I tink this hat will be USABLE for me. We will see !!

Kim, row 4-11 should be 8 rows total. I always get confused on that too. :D
I’m not understanding what the pattern means when it says “1 double crochet, chain 1 twice in next double crochet”. . . I tried a couple of different ways I thought could be right, but it didn’t look right and I just want to be sure. Thankyou! I’m glad there is a place where I can ask you questions :)
Hi Heather, You might already know by now, but…
You would work one DC and Ch 1, and then another DC and Ch 1 in the same st that is indicated. Hope that helped. :)

This means to double crochet, chain one then repeat this again in the same stitcc.
it means, do a single crochet and chain 1 in the next space and then in the space after that do a double crochet chain 1. And alternate going all the way around the circle.
so , the stitch for this hat is : double crochet + chain 1
Do that twice in one space, once in the next, twice in the next space, once in the next,
Do you make these for a 18 month old? How?

Thank you for such a great pattern. I made three of these in one night for the girls I work with for Christmas and two for my neice’s. I used Loops & Threads Charisma for a super soft hat. I added a few extra sc rows at the end, for a thicker head band. I also used a 10mm crochet hook, as I don’t have a 9 in my kit for some odd reason. With the thick yarn, 10mm was perfect! Thank you for the pattern and for keeping me in my Christmas budget!
I just finished this hat in Wool-Ease Thick & Quick. I used the oatmeal color. This hat is a very simple pattern to follow but it turned out oh so cute! I love it! I did make one change. I left out row 10 & 11 because I have thin, shorter hair and it was a bit to long for me but it did not change the style of the hat whatsoever. Thank you for sharing this pattern! Diane
How many inches across does circle measure after row 4 is completed? you made this pattern with Super bulk yarn. Do you have a pattern for making this hat with bulky weight yarn? Worsted weight? thank you for this pattern, my daughter loves it. They work up quick and I have made 2 in the last couple days.

Love this hat!!! Anyone else having trouble with the sizing? My N hook is 10mm & my M is 9mm. I couldn’t get the 5in. gauge with either one. I undid this hat so many times to try and get it right. Ended up making it w/ the M hook and added an extra row before the SC’s. It’s not so bad but could be a little bigger in the body. Maybe I’ll try with the next size up for a hook because i really love this pattern and found this beautiful grey color & teal blue color to use.
I have made several of these the Loops and Threads Charisma yarn and I love them! They are super fast and super easy to make. I guess my guage is a little off, though, because I have to do a few more rows to achieve the slouch look in the photos. No matter! Still love it and love to make them!

Hi, The pattern looks easy and is great for the teenagers. The meshy look seems to lend to the softness and looseness, am I right? The girls would love this but provided its on the soft side. Any suggestions. Thanks, Gini

I’m using a 9 mm hook and hometown usa yarn but no matter what i do i can’t get the gauge! After 2 rounds i only get 4 inches across…..help!

I thought this was a nice pattern to try, I used Loops and Threads Kaleidoscope yarn, with a K hook, so I had to compensate for the gauge difference. I did rows 1-3, then I did a round adding 8 stitches, and then another adding 4. I also did 11 straight rounds, instead of 7, because I wanted a really long slouchy beanie. The end result is really cute, and surprisingly warm :)
I made this hat with two strands of yarn instead of bulky yarn and I think it turned out great! I haven’t tried making one with bulky yarn so I don’t know how different it would look but using two different colors gives the hat a cool look :) Thanks for the pattern!

This is an adorable pattern. I used 2 strands of yarn bee soft secret and the hat turned out beautifully. However I did have trouble with the last two rows. I ended up switching to a J hook was not happy took it apart and tried the I hook. I am still not happy with those last two rows but will keep working until I have it figured out. Thanks for sharing.
